As part of the Trauma in the Workplace project, Kayla recruited and conducted 1:1 staff interviews about their experiences of seeking mental health support following a potentially traumatic event. This is clearly a sensitive and personal topic and Kayla exemplified a psychologically healthy approach in how she conducted and managed the interviews. She created a screening procedure that did not include any unnecessarily probing questions to ensure staff who expressed interest were not in a distressed state, and devised a process to transcribe and verify the quality of the interviews that would ensure the anonymity of the participants. Kayla’s gentle persistence, respectful communication and emotional intelligence resulted in her substantially passing the minimum requirement for the number of interviews and being only one short of the maximum funded target. This in turn allowed our staff to contribute to a psychologically healthy workplace by sharing their stories and recommendations for improvement.
