Vice President Research
& Academics
In August 2017, Dr. Nathan Kolla joined Waypoint as the incoming
Vice President Research & Academics. Dr. Kolla’s appointments include as a
psychiatrist, a Clinician-Scientist at CAMH, and an Assistant Professor of
Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. We are delighted to have Dr. Kolla on
board to help direct, develop and promote the important
research done at
Waypoint. Details about his research interests can be found here.
Waypoint’s previous Vice President Research & Academics, Dr.
Howard Barbaree, retired in December 2016. During his six years in the role, Dr.
Barbaree forged many partnerships and increased research capacity by expanding the research team. Thanks to Dr. Barbaree the research strategic plan includes
a critical component on implementing evidence-based practices
to help improve
patient outcomes. Dr. Barbaree continues to be involved with research at Waypoint and maintains his academic appointment at the University of Toronto, Department of Psychiatry.

Institute 5th Annual Conference, May 16-17, 2017
As in previous years, this year’s
conference on Implementing Evidence-Based Practice in Mental Health and
Addictions was
a great success. The conference served as an excellent venue to
explore ideas on how to best bridge the gap between what mental health and
addictions researchers know and what is actually done in practice and policy. Our
two keynote speakers, Nicolas Watters,
Mental Health Commission of Canada, and Nadine
Wathen, Western University, truly inspired. Watch our video
interviews to hear their insights on Knowledge Translation, Hints for
Students, and Research and Policy.
The day before the conference, two workshops engaged participants to
discuss and share First Nation community
challenges. We are thankful for
generous funding from SSHRC and CIHR, as well as support from Janssen,
Healthtech,
Sysco, and the University of Toronto. Please take a look at our Conference Report for more detail about this year’s
conference and our goals for our 2018
Conference.
SAVE THE DATE: Next year’s
conference will be held May 15-16, 2018, with a preconference workshop on May
14.
Waypoint’s
salute to Canada’s 150th birthday!
A video series showcasing the social history of a
psychiatric hospital in small town Ontario, stigma to compassion.
Sneak
a peek at our preview!
Thanks to funding from a SSHRC
Canada 150 grant, Waypoint Research & Academics is delighted to have
had the
opportunity to develop a series of videos that tell the story of the
impact of Waypoint on mental health over the past 150
years. Our own Laura
Ball is the lead on this project, working with two talented university
students, Gary
Bold
(York University) and Rachel Gerow (Yorkville University). This
project builds on the comprehensive Remembering
Oak
Ridge project that was developed by Jen Bazar, who held a post-doctoral
fellowship at Waypoint. Important for this Canada
150 initiative is to build a
better understanding of mental illness and how it can affect our lives, and to
help eliminate stigma
and increase compassion. The videos will be showcased in the
fall of 2017 at Waypoint’s Annual Gala Fundraiser, Mental
Health in Motion,
Annual General Meeting, and other events.
The full series will be posted here soon!
