Student:        Student: An individual enrolled in a post-secondary educational program covered under a Student Placement and/or Affiliation agreement between Waypoint and the respective academic institution and where clinical and/or practical experience and evaluation is required in order to fulfill prescribed curriculum requirements of learning objectives.

Placement:    Placement: An educational experience where students are being evaluated on their ability to meet prescribed curriculum requirements or objectives. Placements occur for a finite amount of time as agreed upon by the hospital and the academic institution.

The information provided below relates to “unpaid” student placements only.  For those seeking “paid” student placement opportunities, please visit our career page on our website for postings and follow our recruitment process.

STUDENT PLACEMENT REQUESTS

  • Requests for unpaid placements must be directed through Waypoint’s Student Placement Coordinator.

  • Requests should be sent via the Student Placement Request form found on Waypoint’s website under “I want to…Request a Student Placement”.

  • Requests should be submitted a minimum of 2-3 months prior to the placement start. Waypoint’s Student Placement Coordinator will act as a liaison between the educational institution/student and Waypoint employees.

Please do not reach out to or make arrangements for placement directly with our employees.

STUDENT PLACEMENT AGREEMENT

Before a placement can begin, a signed legal agreement outlining the roles and responsibilities between Waypoint and the educational institution is required.  Waypoint’s SPC will work with stakeholders to obtain an agreement if one does not exist.  It can take up to 8 weeks for a placement agreement to be finalized and signed by both parties.

CAPACITY

Waypoint’s ability to accept students is based on operational demands and capacity.

PRE-REQUISITES TO PLACEMENT

  • Students require an up-to-date clear Police Record Check prior to starting placement. It is the student’s responsibility to provide the completed document to Waypoint’s Student Placement Coordinator prior to placement start.

  • Students are required to complete Waypoint’s mandatory orientation program.

  • Students are required to be fully immunized against COVID-19, subject to the duty to accommodate under the Ontario Human Rights Code. Full immunization status is achieved when 14 days have passed after the second dose of a two-dose vaccine, or the first dose of a single-dose vaccine. The school is required to complete an attestation on behalf of the student.
  • Students must have up-to-date immunization records in compliance with Waypoint’s Communicable Disease Surveillance (the Academic Institution is responsible for ensuring learner immunization, we don’t require proof unless there is a situation (outbreak etc.) where proof is required)

  • Students will adhere to any current mask requirements in place at the Hospital.   Students will also complete an N95 mask fit test at the start of their placement, and wear one as required.  The area that seals to the face must be clean shaven for the mask fitting (accommodations under the Ontario Human Rights Code must be made in writing in advance).

ORIENTATION

All students accepted for a placement are required to complete Waypoint’s mandatory orientation program prior to starting placement.  The SPC works directly with the student to ensure they receive the appropriate orientation for placement and will provide detailed information directly to the student prior to their arrival.

There are circumstances when a placement may be delayed or cancelled if the mandatory requirements are not met by the student prior to their start date.
