Neuromodulation uses brain stimulation to help treat certain mental health conditions.

It can be an option when symptoms have not improved enough with other treatments, such as medication or psychotherapy.

At Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care, neuromodulation services include:

• Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) – a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate targeted areas of the brain.
• Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) – a medical treatment that uses a brief electrical stimulation of the brain while a person is under general anesthesia.

The right treatment depends on a person’s condition, symptoms, treatment history, overall health and preferences.

Neuromodulation may be considered for adults with certain mental health conditions, particularly when other treatments have not provided enough improvement.

rTMS and ECT are used differently and are not appropriate for everyone. A health care provider and the Neuromodulation team will determine whether treatment is appropriate.

Talk with your physician, nurse practitioner or psychiatrist if you think rTMS or ECT may be appropriate.

Referrals are reviewed by the Neuromodulation team.
